What is a Summer university (SU)?

Since 1988, the Summer University are the program star for partners of AEGEE. This program gives you the possibility of living a period of time which varies between 10 days and 3 weeks in any city in Europe with a group of between 20-40 people.

The Summer Universities give you the opportunity to try exotic dishes, listen to different music, enjoy dances from different countries, make friends and excursions together, learn to say “Hello” in 20 languages… feel free, you’ll love it, you will experience, you will learn new things, things that you’ve not imagined… discover the AEGEE spirit and what is his!

What are we trying to do?

A Summer University is a summer course that is offered in the majority of cities where AEGEE has a local. These courses have a basis and common prices, being the different organization for each city.

They are not summer courses such as summer courses that can organize at your University about a topic in particular. If we were to compare it to something that you may know, the closest thing would a prom trip. Saving big differences you will now discover.

·Summer Course (SC): Course about a specific topic, ranging from the culture and the local language to the environment and politics. Duration: two to four weeks, with at least 14 h/week of class. Theme: varied.

-Language Course (LC). Specific language courses.

-Summer Event (SE). Of any topic.

·Summer Course plus (SC +): it is virtually the same as the previous, but the participants receive a minimum of 20 h/semanade classes, with professionals in the subject. They are very varied theme, duration from 2 to 4 weeks, with more hours of course than a SC.

-Language Course plus (LC +). Language courses.

·Travelling Summer University (TSU): Organized between two antennas or more (required). Duration: between 2 and 4 weeks. Theme very variable, usually involve travel from one place to another within the same country or across borders, by combining different lifestyles and cultures of the places visited.

Between 10 and 24 days (the most common duration is 15 days), between June and September.

The rate that will be charged once you are accepted for a Summer University depends on the destination and the year, ranging between 100 and €250; Some are something else as it travels across Russia by train, or some may even lower the 100 euros.

What does the price include?

  • Accommodation throughout the event.
  • Meals: half board (some can offer full Board).
  • Transportation throughout the event, tickets to places of cultural interest, emblematic places, activities, museums… and everything that is included in the program.
  • And of course parties!

What is not included in the price?

  • Transportation (plane, train…) to where is made the SU.
  • Not included in program activities.
  • Some SU can offer a unique extra activity of maximum €40 (for example, entrance to a water park), which is optional in any case.

Depends of the its. Descriptions of her, can you to confuse the denominations of the lodgings in English. Here you clarify some of its meanings:

  • Private: private accommodation (can be in houses of partners of AEGEE, or floors of students, for example.)
  • Youth Hostel: hostel.
  • Tent: tent.
  • Gym: Fitness Centre.

In any case, if you want to know more specifically how will be the accommodation, get in touch with the organizers of the SU in question.

Things that must be worn

The organizers will tell you. For example, if you sleep in a gym, will have to bring a sleeping bag and mat. If you go to a beach destination, swim suit, etc.

In all the his is organized a night that is called “European Night”, in which each participant prepares typical food of your country, or presents a typical drink which has brought. Depending on the SU, will tell you if you can cook there, or if you can just take some non-perishable food.

English is the official language of AEGEE. You will have the possibility of discovering that you know more English than you think :D

A its is better than no course of € 3000 languages in London, because you’ll be 24 hours a day with some 30 people from all over Europe, where necessarily you have to communicate in English!

Each its has a different program.

The minimum number of participants is 12 and the maximum 50. The most common are 25.

Will come from any of the other offices of AEGEE which is spread all over Europe. Each other as normal is that no one does not know is before you get to the its, so everyone will be eager to befriend others. What characterizes AEGEE is that people are very open and there are no prejudices come from where you come.

The its are organized by students and for students like you, volunteers (AEGEE is non-profit), is not a travel agency,  you’ll be all day with them, they will teach you the city, they sleep in the same accommodation, you will be holidays with them…

If you are looking for a holiday of Sun and beach in luxury this is not for you. If you want an unforgettable vacation, with other young people like you, it is.

Letter of motivation

You have to make one for each site you choose (in the application process will have to dial three sites, in order of preference). In the letter, you have to introduce yourself and explain why you want to participate in this Summer University. You have to write the letter in English, unless you know the language of the country to which you go, in which case you can write it in that language.

The Charter will be the means whereby the organizers, once shortlisted, you will accept or not, so I be original. Think that people who read the letter will be someone like you, so show you fun! Start the letter with “Dear Sirs organizers”, because they pulled it away nothing.

A three-line letter is a rejection of insurance, and one of two folios also. You write bad English is not an excuse, may anyone who has read it know even less English than you. Write a letter of at least 100 words. You invite them to a round if you choose, you will dance the macarena (neither is it strictly necessary…: D), that you are able to go out and party until 6 and then be standing at 8 o’clock to go to see the Parthenon, you are super fun and you love meeting people, mention something in your country that you like very much, put a phrase in your language : that’s selling well!

In addition to letters of motivation, each SU organisers can ask specific questions on your SU (you will see them in the application form). This is to avoid that participants do not read the descriptions of SU.

Ah! Until you ask it… We are not going to send any examples of cover letter, that is thing of yours. Rather us have done us already with this web, you now get to you.

Who organizes the Summer Universities?

Each of the more than 90 their are organized by AEGEE members in that city, so they are not organised by language schools courses, or professional companies, are courses organized by students for students, who tend to be very successful since those who organize them know well what they would like to participate. It is very important to know that this activity is completely altruistic, the organizers do not receive more than a lot of work for months, that Yes, with the satisfaction of seeing that a group of foreign students enjoy what they have organized, in addition to spending 15 unforgettable days with these new friends.

What students pay with your membership fee, is entirely intended to subsidize activities (both the your as those that are performed throughout the year) and informational materials of the Association.

Who can go to a Summer University?

The only requirements to participate in a Summer University are being member of AEGEE and anxious to travel, meet other people and other countries and of course have fun

Those who make the selection of participants in a determined its are own organizers of the course that has been chosen. What are they based? A plus is that partner in AEGEE activity, if it has organized or participated in any activity AEGEE, but what is most often rating is the cover letter that the applicant writes organizers explaining the reason that would like to participate in your course. Taking into account that they are also students, they tend not to like formalities, so the more fun (but honest) than the letter, more will get attention.

The application is made via the intranet of AEGEE-EUROPE within the corresponding period (usually April). Up to three destinations can be ordered in order of preference. This serves for a first stage of pre-selection, where you try to distribute a little people according to your preferences, trying there are too many applicants for a site. For each destination that you have requested will have to bring a brief letter (indicative: 150 words) of motivation in the corresponding language (English in most of the sites, except for courses in languages, Italy or Germany, in which case it is advisable to write it in the native language of the organizers). The majority of applicants are accepted, but there is usually very chosen cities which can accept all requests. Anyway always can apply again (when starts the Open Call) in SU where there are free places.
